Course Description:

This course provides insights into the levels of sedation mandated by legislative standards and the corresponding training requirements essential for dental practitioners and their teams. Participants will delve into scenarios illustrating each sedation level, explore diverse settings where sedation can be administered, and understand the roles of different professionals in the sedation process, including CRNAs, anesthesiologists, RNs, and dentists. Additionally, the course reviews crucial knowledge regarding emergency procedures. Pain and anxiety management strategies will be presented to ensure patient comfort and safety throughout the sedation process.

 

Course Objectives:

  • Review the legislative outline for different levels of sedation in dental practice.
  • Identify appropriate settings for sedation administration and ensure adequate support.
  • Implement preparatory measures to ensure safe and successful sedation experiences.
  • Employ effective pain and anxiety management strategies to optimize patient comfort and safety.
  • Recognize and respond to various sedation scenarios effectively, including emergencies.
 
 
 

Guest Speaker:

Jacob Pollard, MD

Jacob Pollard, MD, is a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist at the University of Utah. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology at Brigham Young University and his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Washington in 2015. He completed a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Utah in 2019 and fellowship training in Regional Anesthesia, Acute Pain Medicine, and Liver Transplant Anesthesia at the University of Utah in 2020. He is currently practicing as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah.
