Course Title: “Oh, my aching back” 

Guest Speaker: Llyod Mayer, DPT, OCS.

 

Course description:

 

During our time together, we will discuss the common causes of neck pain associated with the profession of Dentistry.  We will discuss the scientific evidence regarding postural overload of the cervical spine and its treatment.  You will walk away with the knowledge and skills regarding prevention and the treatment of your potential aching neck.

 

Course objectives:

 

  1. Understand postural overload of the upper quadrant with the emphasis on the cervical spine.
  2. Discuss the scientific evidence regarding prevention methods.
  3. Independent with a general home treatment program for the prevention of neck pain.

 

Course Title: Mission Nutrition: How to Choose Wisely

Guest Speaker: Nicole Vallieres 

Course Description:

Our personal and professional lives are deluged with messages of wellness and self-care and conflicting information on how to get and stay healthy. In this session, we will explore the challenges, mixed messages, and truths behind the pursuit of wellness. You will be provided with the skills to support your own well-being through proper food choices, and also how to best guide your workplace teams.

 Course Objective:

  • Learn how to navigate an ever-expanding variety of food options and fads.
  • Also, how to support healthy eating in the workplace.



 Speaker #1

Lloyd Mayer, DPT, OSC.

Bio: Graduated from the University of Utah with his degree in Physical Therapy. He has over 33 years of experience in orthopedic physical therapy. He is a past Vice President and Treasurer of the Utah Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association. Dr. Mayer has completed a two-year post-graduate program through the Kelsey Institute in Orthopedic Physical Therapy and is a Board-Certified Orthopedic Specialist (1998-2008). He is adjunct faculty with the University of Utah Department of Physical Therapy teaching clinical orthopedics and therapeutic exercise. Dr. Mayer is also the program coordinator of the Utah Orthopaedic Physical Therapy residency.

Speaker #2

Nicole Vallieres,

Bio: Nicole Vallieres currently works as the Associate Dean of Finance, Operations & Development at the School of Dentistry and has been with the University of Utah for six years. Before her work at the U, she spent 15 years in hospital operations, leading clinical and support teams. She has undergraduate degrees in Biology and Nutrition Management, is a registered dietitian nutritionist, and has an Executive MBA from the University of Utah. In addition, Nicole has been active in the Salt Lake City community for many years.
