Social Work Night at Pioneer Theatre Company

In cooperation with the National Association of Social Workers – Utah Chapter and the University of Utah’s College of Social Work, Pioneer Theatre Company will present an informative and enlightening pre-show program examining how societies have a history of reacting to controversial events with fear and anger that can develop into frenzy or activism. In this presentation and follow-up dialogue, participants will have an opportunity to hear from local experts and ask questions about how current events have led to social divides that provoke groups to react with aggression and even violence.

Dr. David Derezotes (bio), U of U College of Social Work Professor and Director of Peace & Conflict Studies, will present on the subject.  Afterwards Salt Lake Tribune journalist Jennifer Napier Pearce will lead a panel discussion with Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim M. Winder, Fox 13 News multi-media journalist Ben Winslow, and Jensie Anderson, a College of Law Professor and Legal Panel Chair for the ACLU of Utah.

Following the presentation and discussion, participants have the opportunity to attend a light buffet reception and the preview performance of Pioneer Theatre Company’s The Crucible. The production continues the ideas and dialogue explored during the pre-show program. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a landmark work of the American theatre, at once a powerful cautionary tale and a mesmerizing psychological drama – and for this program, a perfect capstone to the evening’s discourse.

NOTE: You must attend the Presentation in order to attend The Crucible for credit. Please pick up your ticket(s) at the registration table prior to the Presentation.
