STUDENT INTRO TO THE OPERATING ROOM (OR)

UNIVERSITY of UTAH

Eccles Health Sciences Library-Garden Level

Friday, May 19, 2017

6pm-8pm

The Student Intro to the OR Course is designed to give a 'behind the scenes' look at the OR and the exciting career and educational opportunities that exist behind the red line.

We provide students with the essential basic knowledge needed to safely enter, navigate, observe and participate in the OR. Our goal is to increase interest in this fascinating, rarely visited area, and inform students about options for shadowing or working in the OR someday.

During this 2 hour course, we discuss career options in the OR, proper dress, basic OR etiquette, OR safety, roles of individuals in the OR, and where/how to stand using the ACS/ASE Medical Student Simulation-Based Surgical Skills Curriculum.

Learners will have the opportunity to participate in a simulated experience of scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and removing their ‘dirty’ gown.

AUDIENCE:

Any individual over the age of 16 who is interested in, or plans to visit, observe, or participate in the OR. Students who are under the age of 18 will need to have a form signed by their guardian to participate (this will be sent via email). We do not work with any dangerous items, sharps, etc. Consent is primarily for completing course surveys and permission to participate.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify the role of observer vs. participant in the OR

  • Verbalize different career options for working in the OR

  • Review basic safety rules of the OR
