&
Beyond the Divide: Merchant, Artist, Samurai in Edo Japan
The following names are inspired by the beautiful art found in Seven Masters: 20th-Century Japanese Woodblock Prints. Shin-hanga is the term given to the style of prints that will be the central focus of this particular exhibition and it translates to “new woodblock prints.” Ukiyo-e is the traditional Japanese art of creating woodblock prints, which is the direct predecessor of shin-hanga. Nihonga is the term for paintings that have been made in accordance with traditional Japanese artistic conventions, techniques, and materials.
