Rules and Guidelines

Entry InstructionsAfter fully reading the rules and instructions, all applicants must apply and pay fees online through our secure website http://umarket.utah.edu/um2/uumusic. Application instructions and materials can be found there as well.

Deadline for application is Sunday March 1, 2015.

Entrance fees

Entrance fees are $15 per musician for all College division students and $10 per musician for High School division students. All fees must be paid by credit card. Checks and money orders will not be accepted. All collected fees will be used to award cash prizes to the winning groups. By paying registration fees, you agree to all rules and guidelines.

Cancellation refunds are at the discretion of the Competition Committee.

Eligibility

  • All musicians must be enrolled in an educational institution or involved in a pre-collegiate home school at the time of competition to be eligible to compete in the Utah Chamber Music Competition.

  • Only chamber groups consisting of three to twelve membersare eligible to compete in the Utah Chamber Music Competition.

  • Chamber groups may consist of any combination of woodwind, brass, string, percussion, or piano performers.

  • Unfortunately at this time, we are unable to accommodate chamber groups consisting of more than one piano player.

  • Conductors for any combination or size of group are strictly prohibited.

  • Entrants may compete in more than one group; however, no two groups may contain more than half of the same members of another group.


*Utah Chamber Music Competition Staff may compete, but must forfeit all prize money. Any forfeited prize money will be redistributed to the remaining winners of their group.


Divisions


There will be two divisions within the Utah Chamber Music Competition: a College Division and a High School Division.


College Division: Includes students enrolled in post-secondary education. (see Eligibility)


High School Division: Includes all competitors ages 12-18 who have not completed a secondary education and have not earned a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.


Competition


The competition will be held on the evening of March 13 & afternoon of 14, 2015 at David P. Gardner Hall. Each group will be allotted ten minutes to perform in front of a three-judge panel.   Competition times will be assigned to chamber groups upon receipt of application and fees and will be emailed to the designated contact for each group. Competition time preferences, as indicated on the application form, will be given consideration by competition staff. However, no guarantee can be made that time preferences will be honored.


Signed adjudication forms with adjudicator feedback will be provided to all competitors.


Repertoire Requirements


Repertoire may be chosen from any time period and may include one movement from a multi-movement work, movements from multiple different works, or multiple movements from the same work. However, selections must equal no more than ten minutes of performance time. Cuts are acceptable. Winners will be required to perform the same repertoire used in competition on the Winners’ Concert.


Three scores must be furnished for the judges on the day of the competition. Photocopies are acceptable, however all photocopies will remain in possession of the competition staff to be destroyed immediately following the competition.


Prizes


4 winning groups will be selected: 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and a High School Division winner. Winning groups will receive a cash prize and a performance at the Winner’s Concert. All judges’ decisions are final, contingent upon the winning groups’ fulfillment of all award obligations. Ensembles that do not receive a prize may receive honorable mention at the Judges’ discretion.


Winners will be announced by 5:00 PM on March 16th, 2015 on the website http://umarket.utah.edu/um2/uumusic. Winning groups will also be contacted via email shortly following the competition.


The cash prize will be based on the amount of entrance fees accumulated and will be distributed to the winning groups as follows: 50% to the 1st place winner, 30% to the 2nd place winner, and 20% to the 3rd place winner.  The High School Division winner will receive 100% of all entrance fees accumulated by their respective division. Prize money will be distributed the evening of the Winners’ Concert.  The cash prize of any winning group that fails to perform in the Winners' Concert will be forfeited and redistributed to the other winning groups.


Winners’ Concert


The Winners’ Concert will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 7:30 PM in Dumke Recital Hall. All winning groups will be required to perform at the Winners’ Concert. Winning groups will be allowed to perform a maximum of 15 minutes.Repertoire must include the selections used for the competition.
