CONCUSSION:

Effective Management for the Physical Therapist

DESCRIPTION:

Concussion is a high priority public health initiative, due to high prevalence and potentially serious long-term consequences that may arise from incomplete recovery and improper management.  Concussion often results in a multitude of symptoms.  Approximately 20% of patients with concussion may not experience a quick recovery, resulting in significant disruption to the performance of work, school and life roles.  This course will review the current information with respect to pathophysiology, epidemiology and biomechanics of concussion, along with pertinent information regarding diagnosis and negative outcome following this injury. A proposed framework for classification following concussion will also be reviewed, along with screening techniques and potential management strategies to influence the course of recovery following concussion.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course participants will:

  1. Describe the pathophysiology, biomechanics and epidemiology of concussion.
  2. Describe key risk factors associated with poorer outcome after a concussion.
  3. Describe common clinical subtypes following concussion.
  4. Perform vestibular/ocular (VOMS) and balance screenings.
  5. Identify common vestibular and visual system abnormalities following concussion.
  6. Discuss considerations for exertion assessment and rehabilitation following concussion.
  7. Discuss commonly prescribed medications for symptoms following concussion.
  8. Discuss the latest return to play guidelines.

CCIP CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES:

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

From 2007 to 2017, the APTA offered the Advanced Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (ACCIP), which was available to credentialed physical therapists to advance both clinical teaching and best practice when providing student clinical education.

The Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program replaced the CCIP (Basic) course with CCIP LEVEL I, and ACCIP course with CCIP LEVEL II, which is open to a wider audience.  The CCIP Level II both applies and goes beyond the concepts of the structured and effective learning environment from CCIP Level I to allow participants to further develop their clinical teaching skills and construct a clinical curriculum.  The program's unique philosophy and design will enable clinical educators to achieve the best outcomes for student learning.
